Stephen Fear, founder of Bristol-based Fear Group, explains why Bristol and Channel 4 should ‘commit to each other’ and create a marriage partnership…

When seeking a business or life partner I always think it advisable to choose one very carefully, which is why I believe Bristol is the best partner for Channel 4 and the ideal place for Britain’s most offbeat and innovative television show provider to locate its new HQ.

Some might think it odd that I refer to a partnership but, in effect, that’s what it would be. Each side would have to commit to each other long term and create a marriage based on mutual respect.

Bristol is, without doubt, an amazing place. Its pure offbeat quirkiness separates it from the other contenders.

The fact that Banksy calls the place home says it all really. The city has two fantastic universities and numerous colleges which are turning out highly qualified graduates in the fields of journalism, and art and design (to name a few).

It is a leading media city, with its fast broadband having among the highest speeds in the UK. With electrification of the rail line between Bristol and London, the travel time has dropped to not much more than an hour, making it the closest contender to the capital by far.

Both rail and motorway links to all parts of the country are exceptional and fast.

Bristol Airport is one of the fastest-growing airports in Europe, with flights to many important business and tourist destinations.

Then we have that famous lifestyle Bristol offers to executives and employees of such a successful and innovative programme provider.

The Devon coast is only just over an hour away and beyond that Cornwall, or France via Plymouth.

The Harbourside gives easy access to a vibrant waterfront where families enjoy top-class restaurants, cafes and festivals.

Add the annual international balloon festival, which the city hosts, and you begin to understand why Bristol has won so many accolades and been named ‘The Best Place to Live in Britain’ on several occasions.

Channel 4 will, of course, make their own mind up on any future location but I would encourage its executives to visit Bristol and get to know the place and its people.

I will even personally drive you all over the city of my childhood and show you why you should not miss the opportunity to make such a great place home.

Staff working on and presenting highly acclaimed TV shows such as Gogglebox, The Windsors, and Channel 4 News, would find a natural affinity with Bristol where its very vibrancy gives everyone such an uplifting feeling.

I don’t know where in the city Channel 4 might locate but the Arena site next to Temple Meads seems appropriate now that the Arena appears to be heading to Filton.

This site is crying out for something special to be built there and, if that isn’t to be the Arena, then Channel 4 HQ would be a wonderful alternative.

With Temple Meads railway station next door, getting anywhere in the country would be easy and make London seem like a stone’s throw away.

Almost hop on, hop off!

I believe Bristol and Channel 4 are made for each other. Quirky, fashionable and honest, together they would become irresistible.
