The Horse and Groom, Charlton, Wiltshire
When it comes to this time of year you can’t beat a good pub for some festive atmosphere and we’ve found a real gem in the Wiltshire village of Chalton, near Malmesbury and Tetbury, close to Prince Charles’s Hygrove estate.
Taken over by well known chef, Marco Pierre White not too long ago, the pub is beautifully refurbished and offers a great relaxed atmosphere in this lovely rural setting.
This is amongst the best gastro style pubs we have visited in the UK and is a very close match for my personal favourite, The Fox at Lower Oddington near the Daylesford Organic Farm shop owned by the Bamfords (owners of JCB).
Today was a flying visit but we still managed to find time for fish and chips!
The fish is fresh and battered amazingly well in a lovely light batter, and served with Marco Pierre White’s signature triple cooked chips which are absolutely superb, as well as mushy peas and half a lemon.
The quality, presentation and overall feel of the pub are excellent and it’s worth knowing that they serve amongst the best coffee we’ve tasted in a long while, enjoyed with a shortbread biscuit!
The friendly Michael served us today and as usual all the staff are helpful and attentive without bombarding you the second you walk in.
Whether you want a quiet Christmas drink, a coffee or a beer and relax by the fire after a walk, or to enjoy an excellent lunch or dinner in the restaurant area as we did today, you are sure to enjoy this unique and quintessentially English pub.
Overall we are very close to awarding it five forks but on this occasion we give it four.
It’s also worth knowing that The Horse and Groom has five rooms available in a converted stable block which whilst we haven’t reviewed those today, are sure to be of excellent standard if the rest of the pub is anything to go by. Our advice would be make sure you book as the restaurant fills up quickly especially at weekends and we can certainly see why.
