Sporting Bar St Tropez France
As I’ve said before St Tropez is a funny old place. The Sporting Bar isn’t full of sports fans as you might expect, although the TV screens do show sport. It is mostly full of locals eating things like omelette and chips or salads and swigging back locally produced Rose.
I have been coming here for years to watch the world go by and believe me it does! It’s a bit tired these days but the service is excellent and the food reasonable for such an establishment.
It is quite possible to sit here during a busy summers evening and see A list celebrities close up and possibly sitting next to a fork lift truck driver or a shop worker, it really is very laid back.
This isn’t a place to come if your laptop is running out of battery and you want to catch up on work or emails because even if you could find a plug socket, asking an international movie star to get out of the way so you can plug it in might prove embarrassing.
The staff are excellent and most speak some English. Service is quite quick considering how busy it is so if you’re wondering around the Place des Lices watching Boule and fancy a reasonably priced meal I would recommend it. Get a seat on the front if you can, especially from about 7pm thro 11pm.
People watching from this position is different than from the Cafe Senequier on the waterfront where you can sit watching the yachts and the people that occupy them. You will probably see fewer celebrities here but you might well see dogs on Vespa Scooters or aged hippies still believing its 1966.
We ate omelettes washed down with a bottle of house white wine and followed by coffee. All in under €30.00 which isn’t bad for a seat and a good view. Nice to while away a couple of hours during any time of day or night.
Overall I give it a three fork rating rather than four as it is really a bar with good food rather than a restaurant. Excellent value though and brilliantly located for people watching.
