DEVELOPERS behind £60 million redevelopment plans for the former Sainsbury’s site in Newport have held “proactive and progressive” talks with Natural Resources Wales (NRW) on the issue of an agreement on a flood alleviation scheme.
Site owners the Fear Group threatened to pull the plug on the project, frustrated by vandalism at the site and what they perceive as delays and a lack of communication by NRW over the agreement.
NRW has refuted the latter claim, and today the Fear Group and NRW got together to try to sort out the matter.

NRW has refuted the latter claim, and today the Fear Group and NRW got together to try to sort out the matter.
“We have to do the flood alleviation scheme to NRW specifications, but want to put that in ourselves. After that, we’ll see.”
The redevelopment scheme involves building a 601-bedroom student housing complex, 142 flats, and a hotel.
Renewed support from Newport council and residents persuaded the Fear Group to alter its position from last week.
Mr Fear told the Argus yesterday that “we have no intention of pulling out at the moment” but that “these delays have not helped the situation at all and we will need some persuading.”
NRW flood risk manager Tim England said: “This is a significant and important development for Newport and, as part of our flood scheme is on this land, we want it to progress as soon as possible.
“The size and complexity of both schemes has meant we have been working with the company to make sure we get it right for both parties and we can protect people and support the local economy.
“We have met with the Fear Group and have agreed the way forward with them as we recognise the value this development will bring to the local community.”
