Pizza Express, Witney
Following the Chinese Private Equity firm, Hony Capital’s acquisition of Pizza Express a couple of years ago, we reviewed the newly opened restaurant in the emerging and growing city of Newport in South Wales, which we gave Four Forks to following a very good experience.
The chain is expanding in the UK and overseas and appears to be thriving under the new ownership. On this occasion we visited the restaurant in the West Oxfordshire Cotswold town of Witney, 12 miles from Oxford.
Witney itself dates back to the Saxon Charter of 969 and appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Witenie” which means “Witta’s Island”. Drastic floods struck the town in 2007 with around 200 properties affected so perhaps it’s historic name bears some semblance when parts of the town once again become islands for the first time in many years.
This Pizza Express is excellently located in Market Square, right in the very heart of the town in a converted building which due to it’s unusual layout has varying characters, including tables in the original front rooms of the building as well as an upper level which has a large glazed roof which creates a great feeling of space. There is also a courtyard, however we’ll have to come back to that when the weather warms up!
We were immediately greeted by very friendly staff and there was a clear sense of the people working there being genuinely happy. Pizza Express has always been family friendly and the Witney restaurant is no exception.
The restaurant was warm, even in the upstairs corridors that lead to the toilets, so it had a very good feel to it and appeared very clean too.
There were several offers available at Pizza Express at the moment including two courses for £9.95 or three courses for £12.95 both represent good value in our opinion and offer something for pretty much everyone.
We shared a starter of dough balls with garlic butter (an absolute favourite) and had one La Reine pizza (ham, black olives and mushrooms) on a traditional base (other bases are available including a low calorie “Leggera” one) and Risotto Fresco with salmon, peppers and chilli which was excellent and very fresh tasting.
We decided not to have desserts so the bill came to a very reasonable £31.80 including a 10% service charge which we added, but which is not automatically on the bill like in some restaurants.
Overall a great, consistent chain and a particularly nice restaurant in Witney made by the friendliness of the staff.
Oh and one other thing, Pizza Express have free Cloud Wifi which makes life easy!
