Golden Phoenix – China Town London

China Town, which is in the City of Westminster around Shaftesbury Avenue and Gerrard Street, was first established in this area of London in the 1970’s, having originally been in Limehouse in the East End where the Chinese population of London were mainly based at the start of the 20th century.

Swathes of the area were damaged by bombing in the Blitz during the Second World War, but with a growing number of Chinese people coming to the UK, more restaurants and businesses opened up in other parts of London, eventually leading to the current China Town in Westminster which is thriving with shops, restaurants and Chinese-ran businesses.

China Town - LondonThere are currently over 80 Chinese Restaurants in the area, with easy access on the London Underground, with nearby stations Leicester Square and Piccadilly Circus.

After a long day of meetings we decided to stop at one of the first restaurants we came to, which is on the main thoroughfare through China Town – Gerrard Street.

This very large restaurant is based over three floors with over 300 covers. The restaurant caters for tourists and business functions too as it also offers 7 private rooms ideal for meetings. This is the first time we have visited it and this review is based on our experience today. As with a number of restaurants, we attempt to revisit in a few months time to give another opinion as the restaurant business is a difficult one, and getting it right every time isn’t always easy, especially for independents.

We were welcomed in by a friendly member of staff and shown to a table, the restaurant feels quite clean and is well presented.

We were served by two different people one of whom was very friendly and chatty and another who didn’t attempt to smile or make conversation and seemed pre-occupied which was disappointing.

The food was ok overall, but the starter of ribs in chilli salt was overpriced in our opinion. They were tasty enough but with just four small ribs with very little meat on them, at £8.30 were not good value in our view.

The braised lamb in cumin with egg fried rice was very tender and tasty though and overall this was quite good value at £11.00.

It was late and we were hungry and tired so we didn’t get to find out if they offer free wifi, and having since looked on their website we can’t see it mentioned so unfortunately we are not able to comment on this aspect in today’s review.

Overall the huge choice in China Town is fantastic, and this restaurant based on today’s review we give three forks to.

1 Braised Lamb with Cumin

1 Sweet and Sour Chicken

1 Egg Fried Rice

1 Small Tiger Beer

Total £53.90
