Christina Gabbitas Encourages young poets with the help of a panel of inspirational judges including Stephen Fear

Budding poets from Huddersfield are competing for a literary prize. Twelve children from schools around the town are among the contenders for the Dame Beryl Bainbridge First Time Author Award – the result of a national initiative masterminded by Christina Gabbitas.

Christina, who set up An Invitation to Capture the Primary School Nation poetry writing initiative in 2013, has been encouraging children of all abilities to have a go at writing.

As part of her initiative Christina spent a day taking poetry workshops last February at the Mrs Sunderland Festival in Huddersfield when she also presented the Junior Poetry Cup to Woodale Junior School pupil Noah Bentley.

The Dame Beryl Bainbridge award has already attracted 60 entries  from children across Englan – 26 of them in Yorkshire. The initiative is still open for entries – with children invited to write an eight line rhyme. The closing date is May 5th. Go to

Judges include Dr Stephen FEar Entrepreneur in Residence at the British Library; Tatiana Wilson, founder of the People’s Book Prize, Hind Abdullah Lenaid, Head of Sharhjah Childrens Reading Festival; Yorkshire business Woman Claire young and award winning authors Hilary Robinson Carol E Wyer and Julie Fulton.

Language is so beautiful and fundamental to our lives that the ability to write and to read it is one of life’s greatest pleasures.”
