300,000 New Homes Needed Urgently

Canada, has a population around half that of the UK yet builds almost twice as many homes every year than it’s more populace counterpart.

We must ask why? Is it because there is more land available? Is it Goverment policy? Is it the efficiency of its house building sector to deliver? Personally I think it’s a combination of all these things.

It is a fact that less than 10% of the UK is built upon. That includes, houses, factories, roads, railways, airports, footpaths, and just about everything else you can think of.

So why are we so reluctant to promote land for development? The answer is in our approach to development generally in my opinion.

Developers are often seen as fat cats driving around in big cars, with big cigars, & even bigger heads! But is this fair?

Like most things in life, it’s not that simple.

I believe it essential to build more homes as fast as we can because for a modern democratic society to be truly stable, it needs to deliver two things to its population. Firstly a home to live in, and secondly a job or business to go too every day.

Personally I do not believe that it matters whether that home is owned or rented. What matters is that it is available and can be viewed by its occupants as a home for life.

Shorthold legislation is essential, or ordinary families will not let their homes when they take short term jobs in other areas for fear of not getting them back when they return home. In that respect the legislation is good. What isn’t good is that we are not building enough houses and flats for long term life tenancies, or for that matter outright, or shared equity, ownership.

We need to address these issues as a matter of priority. Forget politics and sniping at each other and set up a cross party committee to address these urgent housing issues now before the issue of homelessness is the cause of social unrest far greater than we see today.
